Model Train Scales

What are the model train scales? It can be confusing without the right foundation information. There is the N Scale Trains, the HO Scale Trains, there are G and O Scale Model Trains, and then right down to the little toy trains. So what is Scale or Gauge when speaking of Model Railroads?

model-train-grand-scale A model train's "scale" is the relationship between its size and the size of an actual train. "Gauge" is the distance between a track's rails-or width of tracks. Most of us remember the train we rode on at the amusement park as a child. Those are classified as "Grand Scale. They typically sat three people across and have about 4 or 5 cars.

model-0-live-steam Then there was the rides you got to take alone on the Live Steam Scale model trains. This next smaller down model was the one seating children in a row behind each other. Those were fun while we were young!




Just under this scale are the O Scale Model trains, Garden or g Scale model trains, which became the rage in the 1960s and 70s, and are still popular today. These are the most popular new purchase for Holiday Decorations too. People love their Christmas Trains, and these are the perfect types. They come in electric, battery and live steam propulsion. The "ready-to-run" models, kits and parts are also available for commercial sized projects.

The O Scale was originally touted as a little toy train. Toy meaning, low cost, high durability for kids, and just the right size. Easy to add to, most familiar character train, pull toy type not needing a track. Remember the old wind up or battery run trains? Those were all O Scale.
