The last decade of Lionel to Now
Lionel to now has had enough turmoil to make us cry, but don't throw in the towel.
2001-Lionel closed its last manufacturing plant in the United States, again outsourcing production to Korea and China. It has not proven a popular decision among model train fans, but people are still buying their trains.
2004-The Christmas movie Polar Express and book it was based on, was the inspiration Lionel needed. The demand was so high there were shortages reported and prices tripled for a set.

And guess what-It's back! The newest model is extensively improved over any previous version of Lionel to Now. It also has additional add-ons that come out every couple of months.
The Polar Express includes: 2-8-4 Berkshire steam locomotive (one of the most massive train engines to exist), two illuminated passenger coaches that have silhouettes at the window depicting movie action, one passenger observation car with a new rounded platform and also with silhouettes, three straight FasTrack sections, eight curved FasTrack sections, one FasTrack terminal section, CW-80 transformer, four articulated movie character figures, and smoke fluid. Air whistle in tender as well as operating coupler on rear, engine with operating headlight, powerful maintenance-free motor, two traction tires, and puffing smoke as well as die-cast metal body and frame, separately applied metal handrails and all-new pilot and headlight lens shield. Interior lighting and decorated drumhead on the observation car. See they have outdone themselves with this huge set!
2006-Lionel electric train was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. It was the first time an electric toy had ever been inducted. That same year, Lionel made a bigger push to sell its train sets outside of hobby shops, to such stores as FAO Schwarz, Macy's, and Target. By November 2006, the company had turned a $760,000 profit on sales of $55 million.
2007–2008 marked every type of financial and legal trouble it possibly could for the company. Between the secret misappropriation lawsuits against Lionel, to Trademark infringement allegations, licensing problems, and eventually a mess of settled lawsuits, Lionel announced they would appeal and two weeks later filed for bankruptcy, citing the judgment as the main reason.
On March 28, 2008, a bankruptcy judge approved Lionel's reorganization plan, including a settlement with MTH. Although the specifics were to remain sealed, the Associated Press reported that Lionel settled with MTH for $12 million.[2]
Consequently, reorganization plans have cleared the way for the company to exit bankruptcy and move ahead; and as of May 1, 2008 Lionel was fully out of bankruptcy.
Today, why buy Electric Trains? Now more than ever, people are looking to find more meaningful ways to spend their hard earned dollar. Most people want something that will make their time spent at home more pleasurable and fun for the whole family. Model trains and Railroad layouts are mass produced so their prices have come down comparatively.
Lionel has their dream back and many of their products are better than ever! America is renewing its relationship with model railroads. With the new lifelike buildings, the high-speed passenger lines, and even recreating historical landmarks like Penn Station. Joshua Lionel Cowen would have been proud.
You can start a new tradition with your family with Model Railroad Trains.
